Healthy skin works from the outside in and the inside out. If you want radiant, age-defying skin, give your skin a little boost from your diet and nutrition.
Avocados are a form of monounsaturated fats, which help your cells maintain their hydration. Hydrated cells lead to supple skin and can diminish the look of wrinkles and fine lines. Avocados also help your skin better absorb the vitamins and nutrients it needs, so it can actually boost the effectiveness of your skincare products.
Avocados are so good for the skin that you’ll find avocado fruit oil in a lot of topical products, like our Niacinamide Serum. Avocados are brightening and moisturizing—on the outside and inside!
- Olive Oil
Functioning in the same way, olive oil is also ideal for your cell’s ability to retain moisture. This same philosophy applies to the maturation and wrinkling of the skin, as olive oil may work to help promote healthy cell production.
Oranges are loaded with water, which help to hydrate your skin cells in minutes! (Drinking water is one of the best ways to revitalize your skin instantly.) Furthermore, oranges are an amazing source of vitamin C, which helps promote collagen production.
- Brussels Sprouts
Brussels sprouts are another great source of vitamin C, as well as vitamin A and folate. Vitamin A and folate can help prevent skin damage, which works well with vitamin C’s promotion of collagen production. You’ll get similar effects with kale, collard greens, broccoli, and cauliflower. Leafy greens are usually a good purchase since they’re great for your skin and organs.
Phytoceramides are not a food group, but you can get these from spinach, wheat germ, brown rice, and beets as well as other leafy greens. Ceramides are little protectors that keep our skin firm, but they slow down and diminish production as we age. Phytoceramides are plant-based ceramides that work against this slowing of ceramide production to protect the outer layer of skin and also help fight against dehydration and wrinkling.
Salmon is chock full of omega fatty acids, which can have anti-aging effects throughout the body. Omega fatty acids keep the walls of the skin cell plump and healthy, which makes your face radiant and glowing! Omega fats are also found in walnuts, flaxseeds, chia seeds, coconut oil, olive oil and avocados (even more reason to eat avocados and olive oil).
The skin of grapes contains resveratrol, which has been found to help counter inflammation. Long-term inflammation is one of the greatest causes of wrinkles. Inflammation can actually stretch and crease the skin over time.
Yogurt and other fermented foods, like sauerkraut and kimchi, are filled with probiotics and good gut bacteria. By introducing more probiotics into the intestines, your system starts working better and overall body toxins can be reduced. This spreads throughout your cells, including your skin cells. You’ll notice that tired and sagging skin will find life again with a diet of probiotic-rich foods.
Oats are low-glycemic carbs and although oats will not reverse wrinkled skin, a bowl of oats can soothe skin irritation and help prevent further damage from environmental toxins.
- Rooibos Tea
Rooibos tea is a reddish tea with a lot of health benefits. One such benefit is that it can help protect skin from premature aging.
Green tea is also great to drink, since it’s loaded with antioxidants that protect the skin from environmental damage. Plus, green tea is used in spas worldwide because of its ability to brighten skin.
Pro-Tip #11: Drink water! Water is the easiest way to boost your skin’s hydration and minimize the look of wrinkles.
